Muhammad’s new glacier is already gathering fans

December 23 – MAHOMET – With two children who love ice cream, Mahomet’s Nick and Jessica Hanson wanted to open an ice cream parlor in their own community.

Now their new business, The Main Scoop, at 403 E. Main St. in downtown Muhammad, serves ice cream by the spoon and sells it by the pint.

Jessica Hanson said the family always went out of town to buy ice cream before opening their own restaurant.

“Honestly the reason we did it is that our kids, especially our 3 year old daughter, love ice cream,” she said. “They think it’s a food group.”

She also wanted a downtown location, she said.

The welcome from the local community since the recent opening has been tremendous, said Hanson.

The main spoon has 16 flavors sold by the spoon and 15 flavors sold by the pint, she said.

Spoonful flavors include Madagascar vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate chips, cookies and cream, cosmic cookies, strawberries and cream, buttered pecans, Java chips, Mediterranean salt caramel with chocolate coated pretzels, black raspberry chips, rocky road and peppermint. plus the four non-dairy options, coconut-based vanilla, black raspberry, limoncello sorbet, and mango sorbet.

The Main Scoop has seating, as well as three shelves full of board games and a checkers table to help keep kids and families entertained, Jessica Hanson said.

She and her husband also keep their other jobs. Nick Hanson works for the city of Urbana and his wife is a real estate agent for The Nate Evans Group.

The Main Scoop is open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.
