Michigan Creamery’s ice cream named best in the country

NASHVILLE, Michigan (AP) – Moo-ville Creamery, the Nashville-based dairy company with three locations in central Michigan, makes some of the best chocolate ice cream in the United States, according to the North American Ice Cream Association.

The family-owned business won a blue ribbon at ConeCon, NICRA’s annual trade show and ice cream competition. It also received a Red Ribbon for Vanilla and a White Ribbon for Strawberry, second and third prizes for those flavors, respectively, the Lansing State Journal reported.

This year’s competition was the “biggest in recent history,” according to NICRA.

Troy Westendorp, who runs ice cream production, said Moo-ville employees had attended the convention in recent years, but this was their first time entering the competition. Getting high accolades immediately was a lesson in humility, he said.

“We started out like nothing,” he said. “My parents grew up as dairy farmers. And for us to take our own cow’s milk and turn it into award-winning ice cream, it just puts an imprint on everything. It kind of justifies everything we’ve sacrificed over these years to get to where we are, and we’re excited for the future.

So what makes Moo-ville chocolate ice cream so delicious? Westendorp said it’s all in the ingredients. The company uses granulated sugar instead of corn syrup, which thickens ice cream.

They also push the percentage of fat – the natural fat used in ice cream – up to around 16% to 17%.

“(It’s) the most expensive part of ice cream, but the more cream you put in the ice cream, the smoother you get,” Westendorp said.

Since news of Moo-ville’s victory broke, Westendorp said stores have already seen an influx of shoppers looking for a scoop of their commendable chocolate flavor.

“We knew it was going to happen, so we built up quite a bit of inventory,” he said.
